Access to behavioral care can hinge on geography. Acadia Healthcare has been closing some of those gaps across the Midwest. New hospitals are being built in states where inpatient options have run thin.
Acadia Healthcare is the largest stand-alone behavioral health provider in the United States, and Reeve Waud, founder of Waud Capital Partners, chairs its board. Its Midwest projects show how the company targets underserved areas.
Iowa on the Map
Acadia’s 2026 pipeline includes a 96-bed facility with Methodist Jennie Edmundson in Iowa. The project builds on the company’s earlier work in the region, including a joint venture tied to Nebraska Methodist Health System in the Council Bluffs area.
Iowa and its neighbors have stretches where patients travel long distances for inpatient behavioral care. New beds closer to home make treatment far easier to reach. Rural and midsize communities often feel that shortage most acutely, and a nearby hospital can ease the strain on local emergency rooms. When psychiatric beds run full, those emergency departments become the default, so new capacity relieves the whole system.
The Detroit Area
Michigan has seen investment too. A behavioral health hospital under a Henry Ford Health partnership took shape in West Bloomfield, and Emily Sexton was named its chief executive.
Putting a dedicated leader in charge of a single hospital reflects how seriously the company treats each project. A local chief executive can focus fully on that community’s needs rather than splitting attention across many sites. Detroit-area families gain an option that keeps care close to home, instead of sending patients across the state.
Why the Midwest
Much of the region shares a common problem: strong demand for behavioral care and too few beds to meet it. Acadia’s model, which pairs its expertise with local health systems, fits that gap neatly. The region’s mix of cities and small towns makes it a natural fit for a provider that can operate at any scale.
Reeve Waud has long favored businesses that meet steady, real-world demand, and the Midwest expansion does exactly that. Each new hospital gives Acadia Healthcare a wider footprint and gives patients a place to turn.
